General Anthony Wayne established his army headquarters in Greenville in 1793. His target was to achieve control over the Great Northwest Territory. The area was named after General Nathanael Greene. The famous Treaty of Greenville was signed at Fort Greenville on August 3, 1795. Greenville came under the control of whites around 1820. It was incorporated in 1870.
